Sorry to bring up this old but frequent subject of complete air con failure, but when the air con failed in others vehicles did you experience a loud rattle then air con failure immediately after start up.....maybe the compressor failing or something.....If so, was it the compressor failing or another part of the system?......as this happened to me today,

If it is air-con failure I am beginning to think it would be cheaper to part ex the car and buy a new one !! rather than have it sat with a dealer for ages and spend thousands on repairing it only for it to fail again after a typical botch job.......what has everyone else done in this situation, did your dealer do a rapid repair and how much did it cost........ta.....

Point taken and I agree, however I have a month left on a third party warranty that I will use, but just wondered of cost implications beyond the warranty cover........?

If you've still a warrenty then use it. It's a quick job for a dealer to do, but the parts are expensive.

Sounds like a similar symptom to what I experienced recently. Started off with a gurgle in December, had this with a Volvo 850R we use to have and all that was required then was a sysem repressurization + lube. However this was pointed it out when it was serviced at the time but the Ford technician said all was well. By Easter the noises started to get worse, whenever I switched between Auto and Econ got a loud crashing sound from the compressor area. Finally a few day slater no more cold air.....

Resulted in compressor and its clutch being replaced (fortunately under warrenty). The cost, they technician said the warrenty saved my 900 of my own money.

Useful link to ebay item company, replacement air compressor for AC.

The only issue with my current warranty was it only covers upto maximum amount of money, and from what I've read it seems that repair jobs are a bit hit and miss as to long term effectiveness. ;)

just to add a bit to the mix

on my celica gt4 the aircon wasnt working obviously its a performance coupe so a lot of owners myself included remove the aircon as a weight saving mod to increase the 0-60 dash

now im not advocating for one minute you rip yours out ..but

if you are running the car and have decided to live without the aircon and have no desire to sell the car it may be an option

i think my entire aircon system weighed in the region of 25-35kg maybe a touch more?

also have heard a lot of cases where obviously because the aircon isnt working it never gets looked at serviced etc etc

have heard of things seizing such as the compressor which obviouslt wrecks the aux drive belt and takes out the alternator...food for thought

Car booked in this week, lets hope the warranty will pay for it all fixing. It definately sounds like the compressor needs replacing.......will it need re-gassing after this has been replaced, and does the drive belt need to be removed to get to it ???

2 days at garage, not bad, new compressor fitted with 2 year warranty and re-gassed, these warranties on the Galaxy are well worth every penny ! Should have been nearly 600 quid !
